Description:

Louisa Creed has been making rag rugs since 1988; she says she finds it difficult to stop producing them and has made well over 200. Forty-six of her rugs are in museum collections, but most are privately owned. This book presents for the first time the entire range of Louisa’s output – from her humorous depictions of animals to the atmospheric portrayal of mysterious ancient monuments. Her rugs even launch us into the abstract vastness of outer space.

Louisa takes inspiration from landscapes in Yorkshire, where she lives, and from her travels around the world with Lewis, her husband, also a rag rug maker. These landscapes often give contrasting viewpoints as seasons and weather conditions change. Sensitive handling of colour and a painterly appreciation of form characterises them all. Louisa’s light-hearted descriptions of the rugs illustrated in this book celebrate the experiences that inspired her to make them, and the joy of life and friendship they have brought to the lives of herself and her husband over the past thirty-five years.

“Vivid, unassuming, particular, amusing, written with understatement and a lightness of touch, Louisa Creed’s beautiful book richly conveys what it is to create.” – Mark Hearld, artist and designer

Louisa Creed (b. 1937) taught and performed the flute professionally for sixty years. She began making rag rugs in 1988 and they have since featured in numerous publications and been exhibited across the UK and internationally. Website: http://www.louisa-creed-ragrugs.co.uk
